You’ll discover not only majestic mountains, but also clear rivers and stunning alpine lakes.

  • Trail running adventure in Slovenia, Italy and Austria
  • Stunning alpine lakes – Laghi di Fusine and Lake Jasna
  • Majestic Julian Alps and peaks, ranging almost to 3000 meters
  • Alpine single trails in Triglav National Park, offering incredible views
  • Running along Julian Alps Trail Run routes

Kranjska Gora trail running adventure is an incredible choice for everyone, wishing to explore Kranjska Gora and its surroundings through running. This destination is internationally known especially as an alpine skiing world cup host and by ski-flying in Planica. But it offers so much more than that – it’s a true heaven for all outdoor adventure lovers (MTB-biking, hiking, running …).

We put together three circular stages for you, during which you’ll visit three countries – Slovenia, Italy and Austria. These routes will take you all the way towards high mountain ranges, where you’ll be able to take in breathtaking views.

You’ll be able to discover Slovenian Alps, idyllic Laghi di Fusine in Italy and catch a glimpse of Lake Wörth in Austria. There is also a chance you might get to see Austria’s biggest mountain – the majestic Grossglockner (3798 m).

These trails are mainly extremely suitable for trail running, as there aren’t many technical parts, so they are also appropriate for those less experienced. There will also be enough time left after your runs to explore some other activities or take some time off to enjoy your meals in Kranjska Gora.

Kranjska Gora is very easily accessible, because there is a motorway, leading almost straight to this beautiful alpine resort. It is also situated only 80 kilometres from Ljubljana Airport and 200 kilometres from Venice airport (Marco Polo).

Day 1

Kranjska Gora

Arrival to Kranjska Gora, where you’ll settle in, have dinner and get ready for your incredible adventure.

Kranjska Gora is an alpine resort, situated straight under some majestic Julian Alps peaks and at the juncture of three countries – Slovenia, Austria and Italy.

Internationally it’s most well known as an alpine skiing world cup host and of course for ski-flying in Planica.

But we simply can’t overlook its beautiful surroundings, such as Lake Jasna, majestic alpine peaks or an extremely photogenic nature reserve Zelenci – also the source of Sava dolinka river.

Day 2

Distance: 27 km

Elevation: 1500 m

Highest point: 1930 m

Austrian borders and Karawanks ridge

Your first stage starts in Kranjska Gora and takes you towards Austria. We’ll start by following the Alpe Adria route, along which we’ll run to Srednji vrh and admire some of the most beautiful views of Slovenian Alps.

This is, however, not quite the end of our climb, as we need to reach an even more picturesque ridge, which is also a Slovenian-Austrian border. Quite a bit of today’s route goes straight along the border and is accompanied by incredible views of Austria, Lake Wörth and Austrian mountains in the distance. You’ll be able to see Slovenian Julian Alps on your left.

Your highest point for this stage is 1931 meters above sea level and is about half-way of your stage. After reaching that, a whirlwind downhill towards Kranjska Gora awaits.

Day 3

Distance: 30 km

Elevation: 1600 m

Highest point: 1900 m

Julian Alps and Triglav National Park

Our stage again begins in Kranjska Gora, but this time takes us to Planica first, where you’ll be able to admire the Nordic centre and one of the biggest ski-flying hills in the world.

This is also your entry point to Triglav National Park, where we’ll spend most of our day. We’ll start in the glacial valley Tamar and run towards Slemenova špica (1911 m) – our highest peak of the day. There are quite some mountain cabins along the way, so you won’t have to worry about being hungry or thirsty.

To finish off the stage, we’ll descend along a mule track, built during the second world war. This track is perfect for a fast descent into another glacial valley – Krnica. To finish everything off, we’ll run by the stunning Lake Jasna and back to Kranjska Gora.

Day 4

Distance: 19 km

Elevation: 1000 m

Highest point: 1380 m

Italy and its stunning Laghi di Fusine

Our final stage begins a bit outside Kranjska Gora – in a village called Rateče, about 5 kilometres outside our alpine resort. If you wish to prolong your run a bit, you can, of course, start your adventure straight from Kranjska Gora.

Our route takes us across the border, to Italy, where we’ll admire the stunning Laghi di Fusine, situated right under some majestic Julian Alps peaks.

The highest point of this stage is Rifugio Zacchi (1380 m), from which you’ll be able to enjoy an incredible view.

After that, we’ll run towards Laghi di Fusine and back to Slovenia. By that time, you will have circled three countries through your trail running adventure – Slovenia, Italy and Austria.
