Cross Alps2Sea offers you a unique trail running experience from Alps to sea. Everything starts on stunning alpine single trails and ends right by Adriatic Sea shores. To make everything even more interesting, you’ll visit three countries during your adventure – Austria, Slovenia and Italy. You’ll be able to enjoy the stunning Bled Lake, Triglav National Park, Postojna Cave and Adriatic coast. Not only that, as you’ll also be able to take in unique local cuisine, accompanied by local wines. We’ll finish everything off by taking a dip in warm Adriatic Sea. Sounds interesting, right?

We begin out adventure at the train station in Arnoldstein Austria. Beautiful trails will lead us from Austria to Slovenia, we’ll be trail running through amazing scenery of Julian Alps, over stunning passes and we’ll take in beautiful waterfalls views. We’ll run along the charming Bohinj Lake and world known Bled Lake, its gorge and Bled Castle. 

You’ll spend a big chunk of your adventure in Triglav National Park, take in majestic views of Julian Alps peaks, going almost up to 3000 meters.

We’ll return to Soča Valley after our running adventure around Bled – this time to Tolmin and surrounding Alps, which will be the final stretch of our alpine trail running trip. We’ll continue towards Vipava Valley, which is extremely well known for its tasty local wines and incredible local cuisine. We of course won’t miss out on the world-famous Postojna cave. 

We’ll finish off our epic adventure by discovering Reka gorge and Škocjan cave. Our trip ends in the majestic and historically important Trieste, where you can enjoy a lovely swim in Adriatic Sea.

Day 1

Distance: 27 km

Elevation: 1300 m

Highest point: 1508 m

Arnoldstein - Kranjska gora

From Arnoldstein we’ll run to Tromeja (1508 m) and we’ll be right at the border of Austria, Slovenia and Italy. We’ll descend to Planica and its world-famous Planica ski flying hill. We’ll have dinner and spend the night in Kranjska Gora. 

Kranjska Gora is an alpine resort, situated straight under some majestic Julian Alps peaks. Internationally it’s most well known as an alpine skiing world cup host and of course for ski-flying in Planica. It’s also an amazing starting point to explore Julian Alps.

We simply can’t overlook its beautiful surroundings either, such as Lake Jasna, majestic alpine peaks or an extremely photogenic nature reserve Zelenci – also the source of Sava dolinka river.

Day 2

Distance: 23 km

Elevation: 1300 m

Highest point: 1700 m

Kranjska gora – Trenta (Soča Valley)

Your second stage starts in Kranjska Gora and takes you by Lake Jasna, which offers stunning views of Julian Alps.

Your main climb of the day begins soon after that – towards Vršič (1700 m). Trail takes you along a glacial valley and right under some majestic mountains. You’ll also be able to experience some history, as you’ll be running along a mule track, built during the second world war.

Once we cross Vršič pass and begin our descent, we pass the source of the pristine Soča River, which hardly ever disappoints with its truly unique emerald colour. Our final goal for the day is Trenta Valley, one of the biggest natural gems in Slovenia.

Day 3

Distance: 32 km

Elevation: 2300 m

Highest point: 2500 m

Trenta - Triglav 7 lakes – lake Bohinj

Stage four takes you along stunning alpine single trails, right under Slovenia’s highest mountain Triglav (2864 m). Trails take you along the Triglav lakes valley, one of the most picturesque valleys in Slovenia.

The trail also has a bit of a historical feel, as a part of it takes you along a mule track, built during the first world war.

This stage allows you to get to know the heart of Triglav National Park, which has stayed in its true form until today, mostly due to its high level of protection and conservation.

You’ll finish the stage by descending to Bohinj Lake – the biggest Alpine lake in Slovenia. Bohinj is a truly dreamy destination for outdoor lovers, so you can also choose to stay there a day or two longer and try some additional activities.

Day 4

Distance: 5 – 10 km

Elevation: 100 m

Highest point: 500 m

Lake Bled with Vintgar gorge and Castle - day off

A train will take us to Blejska dobrava where we’ll run / hike through Vintgar gorge, an amazing art of nature. Your run will finish off with an easy uphill to Bled Castle, from which you’ll be able to take in incredible views over the lake. 

Bled is one of Slovenia’s most well-known tourist destinations. We firmly believe its unique lake and island, alongside stunning mountain views, will take your breath away as well.

In the afternoon a boat will take us to Lake Bled island. You can also enjoy a swim in Bled Lake during warmer months.

Day 5

Distance: from 17 km

Elevation: from 340 m

Highest point: from 225 m

Train transfer to Soča Valley (Tolmin)

A train will take us from Bled to Most na Soči, where we’ll start running towards Tolmin. Then you’ll be able to choose one of the courses offered by our Soča Outdoor Festival (10 km, 15 km, 25 km or 45 km) for your final run of the day.

In the afternoon you can decide for one of the outdoor activities like rafting, paragliding, kayaking, canyoning offered on river Soča or nearby. Soča River and its stunning emerald colour will for sure take your breath away. 

Dinner and overnight stay Tolmin or surrounding village.

Day 6

Distance: 30 km

Elevation: 1150 m

Highest point: 1400 m

From Soča to Vipava Valley

After breakfast we’ll take a train through the beautiful Soča Valley to Solkan at the end of Vipava Valley. 

From there you’ll be able to enjoy a part of our well-marked Ultra trail Vipava Valley 160 km Emperor trail. 

Overnight stay and dinner in Ajdovščina. For those who like wine, this is perfect timing for wine tasting.

Day 7

Distance: 20 km

Elevation: 1000 m

Highest point: 1000 m

To the top of the Karst

From Ajdovščina we’ll start climbing towards Nanos, which is a high karst plateau in a mountain barrier that separates the continental part of Slovenia from the coastal one. 

Once we reach the top, we’ll enjoy spectacular views towards the Alps, Adriatic Sea and Ljubljana region. 

Overnight stay and dinner in Eko Hut Nanos.

Day 8

Distance: 15 km

Elevation: 500 m

Highest point: 1250 m

Over Nanos to Postojna cave

Start morning run at Ecohut Nanos, following a beautiful ridge of Mount Nanos to the top (1313 m), which is the highest point of today’s stage.

We’ll descend to medieval Predjama Castle and then enjoy an afternoon visit to world famous Postojna cave, the most captivating cave in the world and the largest show cave in Europe!

Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel in Postojna.

Day 9

Distance: 15 km

Elevation: 500 m

Highest point: 1227 m

Over Vremščica and Reka river to Škocjan caves

A train will take us to Gornje Ležeče, where we’ll start a morning run to Vremščica (1027 m).  If you get lucky with the weather, you’ll be able to enjoy views of Julian Alps, Dolomites and our final destination – Adriatic Sea.

From there we’ll descend to Famlje and follow river Reka to Škocjan caves, which will for sure be one one of the biggest highlights.

The Škocjan Caves remain the only monument in Slovenia and the Classical Karst region on UNESCO’s list of natural and cultural world heritage sites. Thus, they hold a significant position among the world’s natural monuments.

Dinner in Rodik and overnight stay in a B&B. 

Day 10

Distance: 15 km

Elevation: 100 m

Highest point: 500 m

From Karst to Trieste Italy

We’ll enjoy a short hike from Kozina through the beautiful Val Rosandra valley on your last day, which’ll take us to the Adriatic Sea and the city of Trieste with its rich history.

You can enjoy a swim in Adriatic Sea during warmer months, so this is the perfect destination to finish off your epic trail running adventure. 

Our final destination is Trieste, which was extremely important in Austro-Hungarian Empire, mostly due to its strategic location. It also prides itself on its stunning historic part of town, located right by the sea.
