ITINEARY

Trail running on Croatian islands outside the main tourist season is a true gem you simply have to discover. Stunning Adriatic coastline, diverse terrains and discovering the islands through running – a completely different experience than a classic beach vacation.

Cross Krk’n’Rab trail running adventure allows you to discover a new place every day. An ideal scenario to discover this area’s diversity. Not only nature – you’ll also get to know beautiful island cities, such as Baška, Krk and Rab, where they specialize in good food and tasty local wines – and not only that, we can guarantee tasty cold beer can be found as well.

There are 6 stages, during which you’ll discover the most stunning parts of Krk and Rab islands. Both are a part of Kvarner Bay, which is crowded with stunning little islands. Krk is the biggest one in this area, and of course most well-known– also due to its great accessibility, as a bridge connects it to the mainland.

Both islands, outside their main tourist season, are an outdoor adventure heaven, so the perfect time to visit is mostly during spring and autumn.

Day 1

Arrival to island Krk

Arrival to Njivice on island Krk, where you’ll settle in and have dinner.

Krk is a Croatian island in the northern Adriatic Sea, located near Rijeka in the Kvarner Bay. It prides itself on its rich history, dating back to prehistory and Roman times.

Today they’re well known as an idyllic destination for a beach vacation, offering stunning beaches, tasty seafood and good wine.

But outside its main tourist season, Krk is a true gem for outdoor adventure lovers, as its diverse terrain represents an absolute heaven for trail runners and MTB-bikers.

Day 2

Distance: 26 km

Elevation: 487 m

Highest point: 290 m

Njivice - Vrbnik

Your stage starts in Njivice, on the western side of the island. Your trail, where single trails and macadam intertwine, then takes you to the east – to a small village called Vrbnik, which is perched on a limestone, outcropping 50 meters above the Adriatic Sea.

Eastern part of the island gets a bit windier, but also offers nicer views. The highest point of your first day is 290 meters above sea level and gives you a stunning view of not only Krk, but also its surroundings.

Our advice after an exciting first day is trying an indigenous varietal of white wine called Žlahtina, which the village is the most well known for.

Day 3

Distance: 22,1 km

Elevation: 532 m

Highest point: 452 m

Vrbnik - Baška

Our second day begins in Vrbnik and our goal for the day is to reach Baška Town, which is 22 km away. We have one climb ahead of us – Moon plateau. Our trail takes us straight across this plateau, because it stretches all the way to Baška Town, where a scenic downhill on a mule track awaits.

The highest point is 452 meters above sea level and again offers stunning views.

Our final destination for the day is Baška Town, which is surrounded by woodlands, numerous sand and pebble beaches – their most notable one is for sure 1800 meters long Baška beach.

The city is also known for its many restaurants and cafes, where you can indulge in tasty seafood meals.

Day 4

Distance: 26,3 km

Elevation: 846 m

Highest point: 558 m

Baška - Krk

Today’s stage takes us to the other side of Baška Town, towards the west and to Krk Town. Our ascent starts right as we leave Baška – today’s stage is a bit rockier and by that a bit tougher.

Third stage also offers this adventure’s highest point – 558 meters above sea level and also one of the highest points on this whole island. There is some easier terrain towards the end of this stage, right before you reach Krk Town.

Krk Town prides itself on its stunning old town, which is one of the oldest on the whole Adriatic coastline. We suggest you take some time off to take it all in and enjoy it to the fullest. There are also numerous tiny stores, cafes and restaurants.

Day 5

Distance: 18,8 km

Elevation: 330 m

Highest point: 143 m

Krk - Lopar

One of a kind stage, taking you across two islands – you begin in Krk Town on and finish in Lopar Town on Rab Island. There will also be a ferry ride in-between.

This is a relatively easy stage, but that doesn’t make it any bit less interesting. Your running terrain will change with this island transfer as well, as there are sandier trails on Rab, which is of course always fun.

Stage four ends in Lopar Town, most well-known for its heavenly sandy beach.

Day 6

Distance: 18,7 km

Elevation: 551 m

Highest point: 400 m

Lopar - Rab

Stage five crosses island Rab, mostly on single trails and macadam. Your stage begins in Lopar Town and ends in Rab Town. The highest point is a tiny village Kamnjak, 400 meters above sea level, and offers incredible views of nearby islands. We’ll also observe mighty mountain range Velebit from there, which winds across Croatian coastline.

This stage’s finish is in the historically rich Rab Town, which has a long history, dating back to 360 BC.

Day 7

Distance: 29,9 km

Elevation: 494 m

Highest point: 130 m

Rab - Lopar

Day 6 begins in Rab Town and takes you back to Lopar Town, but this time across the other side of the island. You’ll know both cities already, but trails and views will be completely different.

Island Rab is also known by the slogan Happy Island of Happy People and we firmly believe it’ll fill you up with some of its positive energy as well.

This is a relatively long stage, so our advice is to start early in order to have some time to enjoy the heavenly sandy beach in Lopar Town afterwards.

Day 8

Distance: 25,7 km

Elevation: 279 m

Highest point: 175 m

Lopar - Njivice

Another day with a two-island adventure is perfect to finish off your trip. Stage Lopar – Njivice begins with a short run to your ferry, which then takes you back to Krk Island.

When you arrive back to Krk, an idyllic running experience on single trails and macadam begins, which winds across vineyards and olive plantations.

We suggest you finish off this incredible trail running adventure with an amazing dinner in Njivice, accompanied by a glass of local wine or a pint of local beer.
