Trail running adventure in Julian Alps is an amazing experience for all mountain lovers. Stunning alpine rivers, mountains, stretching almost to 3000 meters above sea level and numerous alpine lakes. You’ll experience all that and even more in 7 days.

Julian Alps Trail Run Adventure is a connective tour, during which you’ll discover a new place every day and circle around the whole Julian Alps, while discovering Triglav National Park, Bled, Soča Valley, Bohinj Lake and Kranjska Gora.

We prepared a truly unique experience after your third stage – you’ll be sleeping in a mountain cabin at Krn Lakes, right in the heart of Julian Alps. We haven’t forgotten about Slovenia’s highest mountain Triglav (2864 m) either – you’ll be able to admire it up close during stage four.

You’ll experience a lot during your 7-day run – unforgettable views, alpine single trails, a true trail running heaven and a lot more. To make your experience as unforgettable as possible, we advise you to complete this tour sometime between the beginning of May and the end of September, because this is when Julian Alps are a real trail running heaven.

Kranjska Gora, where you’ll start your adventure, is very easily accessible, because there is a motorway, leading almost straight to this beautiful alpine resort. It is also situated only 80 kilometres from Ljubljana Airport and 200 kilometres from Venice airport (Marco Polo).

Day 1

Kranjska Gora

Arrival to Kranjska Gora, where you’ll settle in, have dinner and get ready for your incredible adventure.

Kranjska Gora is an alpine resort, situated straight under some majestic Julian Alps peaks. Internationally it’s most well known as an alpine skiing world cup host and of course for ski-flying in Planica. It’s also an amazing starting point to explore Julian Alps.

We simply can’t overlook its beautiful surroundings either, such as Lake Jasna, majestic alpine peaks or an extremely photogenic nature reserve Zelenci – also the source of Sava dolinka river.

Day 2

Distance: 23 km

Elevation: 1300 m

Highest point: 1700 m

Kranjska Gora – Trenta

Your first stage starts in Kranjska Gora and takes you by Lake Jasna, which offers stunning views of Julian Alps.

Your main climb of the day begins soon after that – towards Vršič (1700 m). Trail takes you along a glacial valley and right under some majestic mountains. You’ll also be able to experience some history, as you’ll be running along a mule track, built during the second world war.

Once we cross Vršič pass and begin our descent, we pass the source of the pristine Soča River, which hardly ever disappoints with its truly unique emerald colour. Our final goal for the day is Trenta Valley, one of the biggest natural gems in Slovenia.

Day 3

Distance: 24 km

Elevation: 750 m

Highest point: 624 m

Trenta - Bovec

Our second day starts in the magical Trenta Valley, offering peaceful and unforgettable experiences in intact nature, it also relaxes us from hectic daily lives and represents one of the best places to explore through trail running.

This stage will unveil the valley’s true beauty in all its greatness. We’ll be accompanied by Soča River the whole time and run along a nice trail. This valley will leave you feeling as if the whole world has stopped.

To make everything a bit more interesting, there will be numerous suspension bridges to cross. We advise you not to hurry too much and take some time to check out The Great and The Small Soča Gorge.

We’ll finish off the stage in Bovec, a true outdoor centre in Soča Valley. If you’re not in too much of a hurry, you can enjoy rafting or kayaking on Soča River during your time there.

Day 4

Distance: 25 km

Elevation: 2300 m

Highest point: 2142 m

Bovec – Krn Lake

We’ll begin our third stage in Bovec. Make sure you’re well equipped, since there are quite some supermarkets and even outdoor shops in Bovec. It’s vital you take care of everything before you start this stage, because you’ll spend your next night in the mountains – in a mountain cabin at Krn Lake.

Not only that, this is a quite tough stage, as you’ll also climb above 2000 metres for the first time. It is a quite scenic route and not too tough, but it will take up more of your time – we advise you to leave Bovec early in the morning.

The route takes us along The Walk of Peace from the first world war, which is also a part of UNESCO heritage. The best part of this stage comes towards the end, when you catch a glimpse of Slovenian biggest mountain lake Krn, with the majestic mountain Krn in the background.

The mountain cabin you’ll be staying at offers food and drinks, so there is no need to worry about enjoying a nice dinner and a cold pint of beer in the evening.

Day 5

Distance: 30 km

Elevation: 1300 m

Highest point: 1809 m

Krn Lake - Bohinj

You start your fourth stage at Krn Lake and spend the whole day in Julian Alps’ high mountain range. You’ll finish the stage by descending to Bohinj Lake – if you’re adventuring in warmer months, there is nothing better than enjoying a dip in nicely cold water after a long day.

This is a stage of many lakes, since you’ll start at Krn Lake, go on towards Triglav Lakes and finish of at one of the biggest natural lakes in Slovenia – Bohinj Lake.

This stage allows you to get to know the heart of Triglav National Park, which has stayed in its true form until today, mostly due to its high level of protection and conservation. There will be quite some mountain cabins along the way, offering a possibility to stock up on food and drinks. This is, however, the part of your adventure, which is completely away from the civilization – pure nature only.

Bohinj is another dream destination for outdoor lovers, so you can also choose to stay there a day or two longer and try some additional activities.

Day 6

Distance: 30 km

Elevation: 1150 m

Highest point: 1400 m

Bohinj - Bled

We’ll again be running from lake to lake. We’ll start by Bohinj Lake and finish the stage by the worldwide known gem Lake Bled, with its magical island and church in the middle.

Our route first takes us to plateau Pokljuka, situated right under majestic mountains. It’s also widely known for hosting biathlon world cup and will charm you with its stunning views and majestic spruce forests.

You’ll finish the day by descending through Pokljuka gorge towards Bled, one of Slovenia’s most well-known tourist destinations.

We firmly believe it’s unique lake and island, alongside stunning mountain views, will take your breath away as well.

Day 7

Distance: 30 km

Elevation: 1670 m

Highest point: 1590 m

Bled - Mojstrana

Your sixth stage starts by Lake Bled and goes towards another plateau –Mežakla. But before you start your ascent, we advise you to take the time to walk through the truly stunning Bled Gorge.

Mežakla is a true gem. It usually isn’t found in classic tourist guides, which is exactly one of its best qualities. Its views towards Slovenia’s highest mountains will take your breath away. If you know your mountains and have a bit of luck with the weather, you’ll even be able to spot the majestic Triglav from over there (2865 m).

This is one of the harder stages, so we advise you to start early in order to have a bit extra time to take in the views. This stage finishes off in an alpine village called Mojstrana.

Your final destination Kranjska Gora is now only 15 kilometres away.

Day 8

Distance: 15 km

Elevation: 500 m

Highest point: 1000 m

Mojstrana – Kranjska Gora

You’ll finish your trail running adventure with an easier and shorter stage. We can imagine your legs are tired by now, so this is the perfect choice for your last day.

The route starts in Mojstrana and takes you towards Kranjska Gora right along Sava Dolinka river. The valley you’ll be running through is incredibly picturesque. You’ll be able to see the majestic Karawanks ridge on your right and the mighty Julian Alps on your left.

You’ll finish off the stage by climbing Srednji vrh in order to enjoy one of the most stunning views of Slovenian Alps.

Now you’re only a short downhill away from Kranjska Gora, which is the perfect choice for an additional rest day or to try some other outdoor activities – hiking, biking, zip-line …
